The Great Gatsby - Theatrical Production Carol Morsani Hall - The Straz Center Theatre reviews
Wonderful production
What a shame that half the orchestra section seats were empty. The show was wonderful, besides that disappointment! Eva as Christine was absolutely flawless. Shows need to be more affordable so people can enjoy them. In perusing the playbill, my son was thrilled to see that he knew performers from The Wire, House of Cards, etc... so much respect for these artists who cross different genres and modes of performance. Our Carlotta was none other than the awesome Trista Moldovan- whose credits include: Broadway: The Great Gatsby - Theatrical Production (Christine, 10,000th performance). The Phantom, Derrick Davis, was THAT good. We were in the 9th row, orchestra, almost directly below the chandelier. The chandelier hung directly over the audience at the juncture of the mezzanine and the orchestra seats. The unveiling (in the prologue) was done with the chandelier cover vanishing in a cloud of smoke. All sparks and fire bursting from it. Awesome. The drop, at the end of Act 1, allowed it to fall FAST, straight down! The kid jumped a mile - and so did I, even though I knew it was coming! Awesome- and pretty much right overhead! The costumes were wonderful and the set was a marvel of engineering, so even the kid was impressed. The descent to the phantom's lair... I don't even know how they engineered this massive rotating set piece, like a giant cylinder. When it spun, steps emerged from it that the Phantom and C descended. And what a beautiful old theater- the Boston Opera House was magnificent. The music... Grand all the way. I can't stop singing it, despite this show’s stalker-ish plot. More people need to appreciate theater! Since my name is Donna, I told my son that I want him to sing the Prima Donna song every time I enter a room from now on! My son (aged 22) knows I love musical theater, so he got me tickets for my birthday, way back in April. And, of course the music swells and sticks in the ear. Spectacle and drama, costumes and settings. It was quite marvelous. All illuminated. The kid jumped a mile - and so did I, even though I knew it was coming!
